Development and production of sustainable fibre-metal laminates (FML) based on natural and recyclable raw materials

In the "Bio-FML" project, Delcotex, under the leadership of the Fraunhofer IPT, is a project partner for the development of a completely recyclable and partially biodegradable fiber-metal laminate (FML), which is suitable for the production of air freight or residential containers, for example. The development of an efficient manufacturing system should ensure that the ecological hybrid material can be mass-produced and the demand for commercial use can be met.

In the process, a bio-plastic is mechanically reinforced (NFK) with the aid of textile semi-finished products made of natural fibres and encased in a sandwich construction of metallic cover layers.

Delcotex develops the fabric which is part of this bio-composite fabric bond. It consists of natural fibres such as flax, hemp, jute etc.

The consortium consists of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT, Aachen, the Aachen Centre for Integrative Lightweight Construction (AZL) of the RWTH Aachen, DIRKRA Sondermaschinenbau GmbH, Stolberg and Delcotex Delius Techtex GmbH & Co. KG, Bielefeld.

The sponsor is the Project Management Organisation Jülich (PtJ), tender NeueWerkstoffe.NRW.

This project receives funding from the EFRE.NRW funding programme in the lead market NewMaterials.NRW of the European Union.
